US Confirms Deployment of Weapons in Space
The United States has publicly confirmed for the first time that it has deployed weapons in orbit.
US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink says the Space Force now has what he described as “on-orbit space control weapons,” capable of defending American forces against hostile action.
Speaking at the Air and Space Forces Association conference in Maryland, Meink did not reveal the type, number or location of the weapons. He said the limited disclosure was intended to strengthen deterrence while protecting sensitive operational details.
The announcement comes amid growing concern in Washington over military space capabilities being developed by China and Russia.
The US also announced progress on other space-based defence programmes, including systems aimed at tracking airborne targets and developing missile interceptors in space.
Analysts say the move marks a major shift in the militarisation of space and could heighten concerns about a new arms race beyond Earth’s atmosphere. CNN report
