District Commissioner Urges Responsibility as Itezhi-Tezhi Receives New Motorbikes and Protective Gear for Agricultural Extension Officers

By NAIS Itezhi-Tezhi Itezhi-Tezhi, Southern Zambia In a significant move to boost agricultural productivity and improve service delivery, Itezhi-Tezhi District has received five brand new motorbikes and protective clothing for its agricultural extension officers. The handover ceremony, held on 13th February 2025, was presided over by District Commissioner Mr. Tobias Namantemba, who emphasized the importance of using the resources responsibly to benefit farmers and the broader community. The event, attended by government officials, agricultural officers, farmers, and community leaders, marked a new chapter in the district’s efforts to enhance agricultural extension services. The motorbikes, procured by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with development partners, are expected to improve the mobility of extension officers, enabling them to reach remote farming areas more efficiently. The protective clothing, including helmets, boots, and work suits, will ensure the safety of officers during their field visits. A Boost for Agricultural Development In his keynote address, District Commissioner Mr. Tobias Namantemba highlighted the critical role of agricultural extension officers in supporting farmers and driving rural development. “Agriculture is the backbone of our economy and the lifeline of our communities,” he said. “Our farmers work tirelessly to feed their families and contribute to the nation’s food security. However, their efforts can only yield maximum results with the support of our dedicated extension officers.” Mr. Namantemba noted that the motorbikes would address one of the biggest challenges faced by extension officers: poor mobility. “For far too long, our officers have struggled to reach farmers in remote areas due to poor road infrastructure. These motorbikes will enable them to provide timely advice, deliver farming inputs, and respond quickly to emergencies such as pest outbreaks,” he explained. He also emphasized the importance of the protective clothing, stating that it would safeguard officers as they navigate difficult terrains and harsh weather conditions. “The safety of our officers is paramount. This gear will ensure that they can carry out their duties without risking their lives,” he added. A Call for Responsibility and Accountability While celebrating the donation, Mr. Namantemba issued a strong call for responsibility and accountability. He reminded the beneficiaries that the motorbikes and protective gear were not mere gifts but tools for development. “These resources represent a significant investment in the future of our district and our farmers. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that they are used wisely and for their intended purpose,” he said. He urged the extension officers to take good care of the motorbikes, service them regularly, and use them solely for work-related activities. “These motorbikes are not for personal use. They are meant to enhance your work and improve the lives of the farmers who depend on you,” he stressed. Mr. Namantemba also called on the community to support the initiative by reporting any misuse or negligence. “Let us work together to safeguard these resources and ensure that they benefit our farmers and our district as a whole,” he said. Farmers Welcome the Initiative Local farmers expressed their gratitude for the initiative, noting that improved access to extension services would have a direct impact on their productivity. “We often struggle to get help when our crops are affected by pests or diseases because the officers cannot reach us in time,” said a farmer representative, a smallholder farmer from lubanda agricultural camp. “With these motorbikes, we are confident that help will come when we need it.” Another farmer also, highlighted the importance of the protective clothing. “We know that extension officers face many risks when traveling to remote areas, especially during the rainy season. This gear will keep them safe as they work to support us,” he said. A Step Toward Food Security and Economic Prosperity The handover of the motorbikes and protective gear is part of a broader effort to strengthen agricultural extension services in Zambia. With agriculture being the backbone of the country’s economy, initiatives like this are critical to achieving food security and improving the livelihoods of rural communities. As the ceremony concluded, Mr. Namantemba reiterated his call for accountability and urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure the success of the program. “Let us use these resources responsibly and continue to support our farmers in their quest for food security and economic prosperity. Together, we can transform agriculture in Itezhi-Tezhi and build a brighter future for our district,” he said. With the new motorbikes and protective gear in place, agricultural extension officers in Itezhi-Tezhi are now better equipped to serve their communities, bringing hope and tangible support to farmers who are the lifeblood of Zambia’s agricultural sector.
