Itezhi Tezhi member of Parliament Twaambo Mutinta has issued an urgent appeal for the evacuation of maize from the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) depots in the central district to flood-impacted wards that are currently cut off from essential supplies.
During a recent statement, Mutinta emphasized the critical situation in Mbila ward of Chief Shezongo where there are reportedly fewer than 1,000 bags of maize available to serve a population exceeding 10,000 residents. With food supplies expected to last only until next week, the MP warned that immediate action is required to prevent a potential humanitarian crisis as residents may face starvation.
Mr Mutinta stated that Itezhi Tezhi depot is currently holding over 15,000 bags which needs to be moved to affected areas where roads are impassable due to damaged bridges caused by severe flooding.
He says that In addition to Mbila, other areas affected include Mauluzhi, Lubwe, and Banamwaze which urgently require around 1,200 bags of maize each to sustain the local populations at-least up-to March.
In light of this dire situation, the law-marker highlighted that the district administration is in dialogue with the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) and the Zambia army to facilitate a swift response and delivery of necessary food supplies.
Furthermore, the ongoing floods have also disrupted critical services such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) implementation and social cash transfer programs, exacerbating the challenges faced by the local populace.
Mutinta reiterated the importance of immediate government intervention to address both the food insecurity and the broader impacts of the flooding disaster on community services.
