SOUTH KOREAN PRESIDENT NABBED

 

South Korea's impeached president, Yoon Suk Yeol, was arrested on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, over insurrection accusations related to his martial law declaration on December 3. 

Yoon's arrest came after a dramatic scene where over 3,000 police officers marched towards his residence, prompting him to surrender to avoid violence.

Yoon's lawyers have argued that the detention is illegal and designed to publicly humiliate him. This is the first-ever arrest warrant issued against a sitting South Korean president. 

The Constitutional Court is currently deliberating on upholding Yoon's impeachment and permanently removing him from office.

The situation has sparked minor scuffles between pro-Yoon protesters and police near his residence. Yoon's impeachment trial is set to continue, with the next session scheduled for January 16, despite his absence ¹.
